This proto-trip-hop / breakbeat version of the Bacharach/David staple is easily my favorite of all versions. It was released in 1988 by the Bristol producers Smith & Mighty (Rob Smith & Ray Mighty).

The “ruffness” of the production, an almost aggressive breakbeat supplemented with cut-up piano and vocal samples, scratches (DJ Lynx) and sparsely placed cowbells and the dark bubbling bass is just perfectly juxtaposed to the sweet soulness of Jackie Jackson’s vocals.

THE PERFECT MOMENT
At around 2:20 the lush strings off the Dionne Warwick original are scratched into the mix just momentarily and it manages to stab you right in the heart!
